BLOG: Support Dean In His Macmillan '15 for 15'!

Dean Brooke Charity Run for Macmillan

You know when people do such extraordinary things you can’t quite get your head around it? Unicorn’s Dean Brooke is one of those people - this is why we are showing our ‘Support For Dean’ and helping him get the recognition he deserves for his incredible fundraising efforts for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Who is Dean?

Dean is 27 years old, lives in Poole and has worked on the Unicorn Helpdesk for six months.

Why is he incredible?

This year Dean has set himself ‘The 15 for 2015 Challenge’ to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. He is actually scheduled to complete 17 challenges in total – the ‘15 for 2015’ just worked better as a catchy title!

His challenges all involve taking part in distance running races or endurance events from the relatively ‘calm’ Bournemouth Bay Run and Poole Festival of Running to a grisly Tough Mudder and the utterly surreal Run or Dye and Zombie Evacuation Race (you need to read about these to believe them!) So far he has completed 10.

His next challenge is this weekend (Saturday 18 July) when he will compete in the 10 mile Rough Runner - which contains the famous travellator from Gladiator! - event at Bereleigh House, near Petersfield.

Not bad for a guy who also weighed over 20 stone when the challenges started….

What’s his motivation?

Dean sadly lost both his grandmother and his auntie to cancer very close together, fuelling his commitment and determination to raise money for Macmillan, who supported him and his family during their illnesses, through the completion of this challenge.

He has set himself the fundraising target of £750 for all the challenges – to date he is three-quarters of the way there.

Why are we supporting Dean?

We think Dean is extraordinary. Dean’s story and efforts have blown the mind of everyone at Unicorn. Not only have we supported him with sponsorship, we want to draw everyone’s attention to the awesome thing he is up to.

Unicorn Platform Project Manager, Tai Saxty said: “Taking part in just one of these challenges is quite a feat in itself but when you take in to consideration there are 17 that’s a huge effort! This is definitely the sign of someone with determination. Dean is so committed to the cause and continuing to raise money for Macmillan, this would be fantastic recognition for him and his family.”
