Outstanding Achievement Joy for Unicorn's Henry

Outstanding Achievement Joy for Unicorn's Henry "The industry's best kept secret" is how judges described Unicorn Training's Henry Phillips as he won the ‘eLearning industry award for outstanding achievement – individual’ at the 2012 eLearning Awards at London Marriott Hotel Grosvenor Square last night (Thursday 8 November).

Technical Director, Henry, is a founding director of Unicorn and has continued to be a core member of the leadership team for 20 years, including three highly successful years as managing director. Over that time, he has not only made a major contribution to Unicorn's success but has been influential in setting the standards for eLearning in the UK financial sector.

From the earliest days of floppy disks, giant pixels and a choice of two 4-colour palettes, Henry saw the potential of computer-based learning delivery, and developed principles for developing engaging interactive content that still apply today.

He has always placed the learner at the centre of courseware design and, such is his thorough understanding of the complex subject matter, lives by the principle that you can’t teach what you don’t know.

A genuinely funny and creative writer, he has been the brains behind some of Unicorn’s most iconic projects including the State of Adversity – an entirely fictitious land and virtual insurance market that underpins Unicorn’s award-winning ‘Morotania’ general insurance simulation - and the Great Balloon Race interactive assessment.

Henry is stepping down from his full-time role at a time when Unicorn is in robust health.

Peter Phillips, Unicorn CEO, said: “The judges described Henry as one of eLearning's best kept secrets and he is.

"He has never sought the limelight and has been content to lead by example from behind the scenes, but that does not diminish the enormous contribution he has made to the industry over 20 years.

"The personal recognition associated with this Outstanding Achievement Award is a fitting and timely recognition from the industry he has served so well.”

It was a quacking night all round for Unicorn as the inaugural ‘The Great Duck Race’ – devised and designed by Unicorn Training as the awards’ official Game Sponsor - proved a huge success at the Gala Evening.

The winning duck was ELTON designed by Moira Nicholson from Saffron. Moira’s duck had a particularly effective design combining speed, stability and bags of luck. She is donating her £500 charity prize money to Shelter.

Henry's award comes as Unicorn Training reflects on another year of remarkable activity across all aspects of the business and starts looking forward to marking its 25th anniversary at the forefront of financial services eLearning delivery in 2013.

Unicorn’s guests at the ceremony included senior learning and development specialists from The Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply (CIPS), Tesco Bank and Santander UK.
